Course Description

(Cross-listed as MUS 0056) Representations of music and musicianship in contemporary cinema. Examination of a number of films, focusing in particular on the soundtrack: which musical works it quotes, and how these works interact with the film's narrative. Each film thus provides the point of departure for the exploration of a broad range of issues related to music and its sociocultural significance, an exploration tangibly linked to the concrete experience of music as a representational practice.
