Course Description

Russian literature in a period of political, social and cultural upheaval. Focus on how literature encouraged and critiqued ideas of revolution and the character of the revolutionary. Attention to political currents, avant-garde movements and their interconnection plus the dynamic response in the 1920s to the Bolshevik revolution. Readings include Tolstoy, Chekhov, Bely, Zamyatin, Bulgakov, Mayakovsky, Kollontai as well as political manifestoes and essays. Alternate years. (May be taken at 100 level with consent).
