Qualitative and Mixed Methods
DHP D244M
Course Description
Introduces mixed-method research in the study of politics and policy, with an emphasis on how to effectively use qualitative methods for causal inference. We will answer questions such as, what is good mixed-method design? What are the relative strengths and weaknesses of qualitative and quantitative methods, and how do you make the sum greater than the parts? We will cover the nuts and bolts of specific qualitative methodologies, including case studies, interviews, and process-tracing, but with a consistent focus on how each method can contribute to strong research design when used alone or in combination with quantitative tools.
