Course Description

This course is for students who have achieved basic painting skills and want to further their technique, knowledge, and vision at the intermediate or advanced level. Projects for this course are self-directed—students follow their own chosen path, with direction from the instructor and support from other students. Each week, students will present their work through screen sharing and will receive focused feedback on their progress.

The course covers painting techniques, archival issues, color, composition, style, content and meaning, and more. Each class begins with an illustrated half-hour lesson in which we will introduce painters, both known and unknown, who brilliantly address topics that are of special interest to students in their work. After the lesson, students will receive individualized feedback from the instructor. All students will benefit from the ability to continue working in their own studios while simultaneously observing online the dialogue between the instructor and the other students. Students are encouraged to contribute to these discussions. “Office hours” with the instructor can be had online or in person.
