Origins of Modern Art

Course Description
This course offers a consideration of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century artistic and architectural production and the idea of the Modern through a range of interregional, critical, and theoretical perspectives. Contexts of visual culture are explored in tandem with movements including Impressionism and Postimpressionism, Modernisme in Catalonia and Art Nouveau, Fauvism, Expressionism, Cubism, Futurism, and Constructivism. Discussion questions critical reception, artistic agency, exhibition modes and art markets, and technological innovations coupled with emerging understanding of the human senses of perception in space and time.
Basic Enrollment Requirements:
Academic Year (Fall/Spring): Unofficial Transcript – High School Diploma or current high school transcript (for high school students only in applicable classes), Bachelor’s Degree, or progress towards a Bachelor’s Degree + 3.0 GPA.
