Why people migrate across international borders; ability of the nation-state to control migration flows; assimilation and incorporation of foreign 'outsiders' into American social life; ways that migrants build and sustain lives across international borders; and challenges to two traditional types of membership: race and ethnicity, and citizenship and national belonging.
