This advanced course focuses on the history of Islamic law and its role in the contemporary world. We will examine issues of law and the state, the development of a recognized religious class and Islamic law, the place of shari`a in relation to customary and government law, the legal system and its impact on society, women, and family law. In the modern period we look at the effect of western influence and modernization on law, and the use of shari`a by modern Islamic states such as Pakistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Basic Enrollment Requirements: Unofficial Transcript – Bachelor’s Degree or progress towards a Bachelor’s Degree + 3.0 GPA
