Course Description

Basic concepts of classical and molecular genetics, including Mendelian genetics, genetic mapping, the genetic code, gene transcription and translation, regulation in prokaryotes and eukaryotes, genomics, and human chromosomal abnormalities. Requires completion of BIO 0013 Cells & Organisms (or equivalent).

Students will expand the basic knowledge of genetics attained in introductory biology courses, learn new terminology and core concepts, and explore how the biology of cells involves the interconnectedness of genetics and biochemistry. Students will leave the course with a solid understanding of classical and molecular genetics and learn to think like a geneticist. They will be able to demonstrate their ability in understanding and explaining the logic and core concepts of classical and molecular genetics, including: prediction of genotypic and phenotypic ratios for complex crosses; mechanisms of DNA replication, recombination, transcription and translation, and how mutations can alter the outcomes of these processes; mitosis and meiosis; gene mapping; gene expression; genetic engineering and genomics. Students will apply this knowledge to solving complex problems by utilizing critical thinking skills and analyzing and predicting experimental results.

Basic Enrollment Requirements:

Academic Year (Fall/Spring): Unofficial Transcript – High School Diploma or current high school transcript (for high school students only in applicable classes), Bachelor’s Degree, or progress towards a Bachelor’s Degree + 3.0 GPA.

Summer Session: None.
