Course Description

The Food is Medicine 101 continuing education (CE) course aims to educate health professionals on the critical link between nutrition and health and its application to the healthcare setting. This 1-hour course will provide definitions of Food is Medicine (FIM) and its related programs; context of FIM within the current state of chronic disease, healthcare costs, and health inequities; evidence-based information about interventions that integrate FIM into patient care; practical strategies for applying FIM in clinical settings; policy directions; and resources for further learning.

This course is available to the public and will offer the following types of continuing education: AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ and ANCC Contact Hours.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify the critical role of diet in health.
  • Define Food is Medicine and describe its potential value in the context of national dietary patterns, health outcomes, and health disparities.
  • Describe the different types of Food is Medicine interventions, their underlying science, and their applications for patient health and equity.
  • Identify opportunities for healthcare providers to engage in Food is Medicine and other nutrition interventions in clinical practice.

  • 100% Online (Asynchronous – anywhere, anytime)

Accreditation Information:

Physicians: 1 AMA PRA Category I Credit™

Nurses: 1 ANCC Contact Hour

Requirements for Successful Completion:

Physicians, Nurses, RDs/DTRs, and other healthcare professionals seeking CE credit/contact hours or attendance verification: To receive CE credit/contact hours/attendance certificate, learners must register and view the entire course on the University College Canvas hosting site. Afterwards, learners must follow the link provided at the end of the course, which will take them to the eeds site to create a free account. On the eeds site, learners must successfully complete the required post-test with a minimum score of 80% and complete the required online evaluation. Partial credit/contact hours will not be awarded. Certificates will be available to access/print immediately upon completion of the post-test and evaluation on eeds.
