Course Description

(Cross-listed as HIST 151). Investigation of Athens in the period of her greatest power, prosperity and cultural achievement. Consideration of the methods by which Athens acquired and maintained an empire, the internal workings of the Athenian democracy, the economy of the Athenian state, the conditions of life for citizens, women, slaves and foreigners, the intellectual renaissance which made Athens into "the School of Hellas," and the contribution of outstanding individuals, among them Themistocles, Cimon, Pericles, Alcibiades, and Socrates. Frequent reference to ancient documents and works of literature in translation, and images of archaeological sites and objects.Recommendations: CLS 31 or 37.
