Course Description
We will review some major schools of thought that were debated during the 20th century: liberalism, Marxism, positivism, psychoanalysis, and counter-Enlightenment ideas. Then we will read texts by Hayek, Berlin, Dewey, DuBois, Luxemburg, Gramsci, Benjamin, Arendt, Horkheimer and Adorno, Foucault, and Habermas. This will be a reading-intensive seminar with a term paper.
Recommendations: Sophomore standing or permission of instructor and completion of PS 41 or 42 or a political philosophy course.
